Audi unleashes über R8
An £80,000, 420bhp Audi R8 not manly enough for you, eh? Then wrap your eyes around this.
Unveiled at last week's Essen Motorshow the R8 LMS is an out-of-the-box, ready-to-race GT3 car – the first of its kind ever developed by Audi specifically for customer use. That means any of us could get our hands on one…if of course any of us have a spare £225,000 down the back of the sofa. Haven't they heard about the credit crunch?

For the money, the road-going 4.2litre V8 has been subbed out in favour of a mid-mounted V10, that belts out 500bhp. And because GT3 race regulations exclude four-wheel drive, all thispower is delivered to the rear-wheels only by a newly developed six-speed box.

Being a race car there's also up-rated and lowered suspension, Michelin track tyres and more carbon fibre than a Stealth fighter.

No mistake, it's a beast and manages to make the standard R8 look a bit ordinary by comparison, but it's still not my favourite no-holds-barred track conversion. That title stays firmly in the back of this Cosworth Ford Transit van. Beat that Audi.
