Pulstar plugs fitted
Firstly, hooray for me! I’ve finally fitted my Pulstar spark-plugs in the MR2.
I thought I’d keep them back until I had received my new dizzy cap, rotor arm and leads and replace everything in once go. That way I could see if they made a difference to the car’s performance and economy – also the old ones were on the way out.
As the old plugs were pulled out, we could see the car was running lean, but we already knew this from the dyno run. A SARD fuel regulator is on my shopping list along with a Profec-B boost controller to try and get the over-fuelling sorted.

The MR had also been suffering from a misfire and so the attention was long overdue. After taking out the old plug leads we spotted that they had been arcing-out on the block.
The standard 5mm leads we fitted were not as thick as the Ultra aftermarket 7mm jobbies that were originally on the car from Japan, so I guess I’ll upgrade these as soon as I can.
To make matters worse the rotor arm was shot to bits. Just take a look at how rinsed it was… Now the nice new one is in place.

Working on the engine of the MR2 is not as easy as other cars I’ve owned, to say the least. Even a basic job like changing the leads is fiddly and takes longer than a normal front-mounted engine car.
That said, it’s wicked to have it running smoothly again and difficult to work on it might be, you can forgive it everything once you’re back behind the wheel.
