Pulstar plugs spark green debate

Forget what you know about spark-plugs. The rules have changed as a new breed of high performance plug is on the shelves.

They may look the same as the ones in your car now, but inside it’s a whole new ball game. The new Pulstar plug maker’s claim they can generate a spark ten times over your normal OE plug, thanks to the technological use of a capacitor, or in this case a pulse circuit.

Benefits of the new-era plug is a larger spark and the improvement of fuel economy. The makers report that the US environmental Protection Agency tested them and reported significant gains in fuel economy, horsepower and acceleration and an overall reduction in emitted greenhouse gases.

Keeping it green, the firm’s test showed that they gave a Toyota Prius an extra 3mpg by using Pulstar plugs. With prices at the pumps hitting motorists harder than ever, it could be a case of every little helps.

However, at Motoraddicts it’s about power and generating as much as possible from our cars. To try and see if we could become a little greener and yet still keep our bhp-hungry bellies full, we thought it would be a good idea to try and test these Pulstar plugs for ourselves in the real world.

A set has been placed on order and we will take the plugs to the street in a bid to boost horsepower and acceleration and still be on the green side.

While we may not be wanting to hang up our big engines for an electric trike just yet, it might just give us some of that warm feeling inside, knowing we are doing a little bit to help.
