Soggy Sunday - Motoraddicts meet

A day of epic adventure, biblical weather and the Motoraddicts UK meet!

To say it was wet would be an under-statement but what-a-way to kick start the Power & Performance get together.

Before I could head down to the Crown & Treaty in Uxbridge and talk cars, I’d agreed to help out with the speedo conversions and fog light fittings on a pair of freshly imported Nissan Figaros.

The quirky, retro look cars, based on the Nissan Micra, are becoming pretty fashionable with the ladies. As there were only ever 20,000 units produced the prices of Japanese imports are rising – so if you own one you could be quids in…

As the H20 continued to bombard us, we figured that the meet would be low-key. Not only had the rain kept cars locked snugly in garages, we were also competing with two major car events, JAE and Edition 38. However, the hardcore Motoraddicts regulars rolled out in force and we were pleased to be joined by Richard in his sweet looking R33, sat on gold BBS rims.

After a brief interval of sun, the rain returned and ended our day. Normally my blog would end here, but this time it’s where the real adventure begins.

The rain was intense and while I was cruising home I was shocked to see the road buried under at least two foot of flood water. As the Toyota is lower than a snakes roodie bits, there was no way I was even going to attempt wading through.

I opted to take a longer route home, but the visibility was poor. Torrents washed over the whole of the dual carriageway and then I saw debris across both lanes. Braking late and pulling a face that looked like I’d bitten a lemon, I managed to hold the car and get it stopped. The MR2 was now resting on a bank of mud and rocks.

I got out to check for damage and saw Aaron, a meet regular, suffering problems from the excess water. As speeding motorists belted down the dual lanes we reckoned it was only time before one hit the rocks and caused an accident.

After calling the Police we flagged down traffic for over 45 minutes until they arrived and closed the road. Many people gave us a thumbs-up and a friendly beep for the warning, but of course you get a few dumb-asses who managed to obtain a driving licence – one car even spun out and hurtled towards us. Just like in the movies it seemed to happen in slow-mo.

The force of the water created havoc on the roads, I’ve never seen floods like it in this area before…
