UK speeders look out

Another government attack on the motorist has made its way to the headlines in the UK this week. The latest proposal could see anyone caught driving 20mph over the limit dealt six penalty points instead of the current three.

This I think is a good idea in residential and built-up areas as driving 20mph over the limit in a 30 zone is entirely unacceptable.

However, current thinking is that this will also apply on the motorways, where the 70mph speed limit is already under fire for being out-dated. If the government want to introduce a new sterner penalty, they also perhaps need to review the outdated motorway limits.

The original 70mph limit was set way back in 1964. Technology has advanced almost unrecognisably since then. Brakes were not loaded with ABS, airbags were unheard of and tyres were similar to the ones on push-bikes.

So is the 70mph still acceptable in today’s motoring world?

A more effective solution might be to look at the driving test rather than the speed limits. Why not make the driving test a little longer and more difficult with a more practical element and a mandatory motorway section?

In the UK you do not have to take any lessons on a motorway before you get your full driving licence. Surely this is crazy?

If safety is the main cause for concern, then a few simple additions to the driving test would help British roads see a new generation of more savvy motorists.

A bit of rational thinking could go a long way here…

 Having a good old rant
