Volvo 244 ridin’ dirty
Motoraddicts has much love for street sleepers, and we don’t mean the homeless – we are talking about cars oozing big bhp while looking like a stock daily driver.
The Volvo 244 has the same aerodynamic qualities as a house brick and would need a calendar to record it’s 0-60 time, so you might think it an odd choice of car to become your latest project.

But this 244 has landed in the lap of its current owner Frank, after being family owned and handed down from brother to brother. It retains a sentimental value that only the owner can appreciate – but what the rest of us can appreciate is that it’s now packing a Toyota 1JZ-GTE 2.5 twin turbo engine!

This sensible Swedish saloon used to be the punch line of jokes, but now it punches holes in the atmosphere as the in-line six lump boosts power in the Volvo to 232 bhp (171KW) at the rear wheels. Running stock Toyota internals and ECU, there is further room to increase the power with the help of aftermarket tuning.

Frank has not just gone to town by adding in the Japanese engine, he has also made the 244 more moody by re-spraying it Daytona Violet and adding a 740 front spoiler and smoothing off all the badges.
The car has been dropped 21mm closer to the ground and hugs the top of the Michelin pilot tyres that wrap the 15” 5th gear stealth alloys.

So if you are in Australia and find yourself at the lights stuck alongside a growling purple Volvo 244 – you’ll have to ask your self “Are you feeling lucky – well do you, punk?”
