Group: Fast and Furious...
This group is specifically for things that are fast and furious, rather than things that look pretty but perform like Gwyneth Paltrow in 'Shallow Hal'. Obviously, if something is fast, furious and pretty as well it's allowed! Things don't necessarily have to be cars, but it helps to have wheels... oh yeah, and a motor (of course)... but the basic principle is that if it's massively cool and provides transport it's allowed (which is my caveat for getting my dog in there! ;-).

Richard Hammond - The Hamster - Drag Crash!!!
posted by Morpheus, 21-Oct-06

For all of you outside of the UK, Richard Hammond is a presenter on the #1 UK TV programme for petrol heads, called Top Gear. He's also one of the most popular TV presenters, thanks to his friendly nature and the fact that he puts up with Jeremy Clarkson week after week. His nickname is 'The Hamster', which was bestowed upon him by Mr Clarkson himself, probably because Mr Hammond is quite... well... small. Personally, I think he's cool for his road tests where so far he has crashed a Porsche...

Donnington Track Day
posted by Morpheus, 12-Jun-06

Before you get confused... this was on a bike... OK?! I don't know if I had really high expectations or was already at a good enough standard because I wasn't immediately blown away by my track day at Ron Haslam's Race School. It's been almost a week now and I'm starting to look back at it with more enthusiasm now though. There were 3 15-minute on-track sessions, where they pair you off 2 students to 1 instructor. The first person I was paired with was a woman called Jane, who hadn't hooned a...

200MPH (almost) on 2 wheels...
posted by Morpheus, 04-Apr-06

This is the famous 'peripherique' video of a biker doing a lap of the Paris ring road. I don't think he quite makes 200mph (coz bikes wouldn't go that fast when this video was made), but it's fast... and scary! <object> Unfortunately, 'Ghostrider' (as he was known) died in the early nineties whilst trying to break his own record... and obviously failed!

200MPH - YOU MUST WATCH THIS!!
posted by Morpheus, 04-Apr-06

This is a British TV program that tried to get an old Lotus to do 200MPH, but also shows a 200MPH Toyota Corolla (yes... 200MPH in a Corolla) and a 850BHP Ford Sierra! If you've ever thought about making your car do the double ton you've got to watch this programme... in fact, JUST WATCH IT ANYWAY coz it's brilliant viewing. <object> I think I see a trend starting with these videos... so watch this space...

Buying a new car
posted by Wayne T5, 31-Mar-06

Acura, Honda: Most of the folks I've talked to never consider purchasing an Acura. Several people actually gave me blank stares. But those who own Acuras love them. Honda, on the other hand, gets a huge response: "All our cars are Hondas." "Honda's have a great rep." "I never have problems with my Honda." As an owner of a 2005 Honda Accord hybrid, I can vouch there may be something to all this praise. Audi: One of the few owners who owns these cars loves it but complains about all the...

Oil be damned!
posted by Morpheus, 01-Mar-06

I was having a discussion recently about changing oil in cars, specifically how frequently people do it. It made me realise than unless something goes 'bang', I start to hear ticking on start-up or the oil light comes on I don't really bother with what's happening with my oil. Maybe it's because I have German cars and Japanese bikes, which require very little mechanical attention, but I think I've only ever changed my own oil twice, and that would have been nearly 15 years ago (I started...

What's the group icon all about?
posted by Morpheus, 01-Mar-06

I've been asked a few times what the group icon is all about. There are a few possible versions of the answer... so take your pick... 1 - I'm a fan of the Rizla Suzuki race team: http://www.rizla-suzuki.co.uk/ 2 - I'm a fan of the 'Rizla Game': "This involves 3 or more people, the more the better. Each person writes a celebrity's name on a rizla and sticks it on someone else's forehead. They then have to work out who they have on their own head by asking questions. Only questions...

Engine stats...
posted by Morpheus, 27-Feb-06

As a complete petrol head I was amazed at some engine statistics I read this weekend in a US motorcycle magazine. Please forgive the fact that it relates to 2 wheels and not 4, but the new Yamaha R6 is really pushing the boundaries of technological performance in a road going vehicle. Check out some of these statistics... Red line RPM: 17,500! Each piston is subjected to 9000G at each change of direction, which is the equivelant of the weight of several bikes being pushed and then...
