NASCAR overtake fail

With just half a lap left, and first place driver Jimmie Johnson in his sights, NASCAR driver Carl Edwards decided it would be a good idea to try a move inspired by a video game to steal the win.

Having noticed that bouncing your car off the wall to get around corners more easily works well in computer land, Edwards figured that this could also be applied to real life racing. The American racer dived up the inside of Johnson on the final corner of last weekend’s Sprint Cup at Kansas Speedway.

Unfortunately for him, the speed and momentum were all too much and the car slid up to the outside of the banked corner and slammed into the wall – letting Johnson back past.

"I planned on hitting the wall, but I didn't plan on the wall slowing me down that much," said a grinning Edwards to the press afterwards. "In video games, you can just run into the wall and run it wide open. That's what I did, but it didn't quite work out the same as the video game. I just really, really wanted to win this race."

Although we’re not sure whether Edwards still realises the difference between reality and Video games, you’ve certainly got to admire the bravery for giving it a go…
