Time Attack R3. Knockhill.
What a superb day!
It started off dry then rained in the last session and in the first part of the finals. It became a bit of a leveler in the wet though at the end. A lot of the big powered cars couldn't get the power down so times tumbled.
I went out 3rd and there was rivers running across the track and the kerbs were like ice rinks! Track is amazing as anyone that has driven it will testify. Adverse cambers on blind bends throw the car right across the track, straight into the gravel then wall if your not wary.
It was my first time there and Im still getting used to the car.
I went out with my friend Olly in the Rotrex EP3 on the saturday and the night before he and many of the others were trying to scare the crap out of me by saying I had the wrong car, wrong driving style and to be very carefull.
Slept really well Friday night!.....NOT!
Track is something else! Perched on the side of a hill its very technical and narrow.
Knew by the end of the first lap I was stuffed as the uphill hairpin means a 1st or 2nd gear shift. Problem for me is my box is a very long drag one with no syncro's. It doesnt do 1st unless standing still then not very well so it was 2nd for me and that meant a drop to 2000rpm so I was way off boost until I got rolling after the bend. I recon on this loosing me a good couple of seconds.
Anyway, I was again the only one on road tires but with added brakes this time. My times were consistently a good 5 seconds off the other GTR's but they were stripped 32's on slicks so I wasnt worried. 1st session was a bit heart in the mouth stuff but after the 2nd it was great. Was getting into the groove sorting lines and setup. 3rd session it was raining. The car actually went and felt so much better with more grip on my T1R's than in the dry. Times came down from the prepped cars and all 3 GTR's were within 1 second of each other. I was buzzing! My times were still the same in the wet as in the dry!
In the final I was 3rd out and it was lashing down. It soon stopped and the other GTR's had a dry line apearing as they were pretty near the last to run. Am very very happy finishing 0.8s behind Shane in the R32 that was supported by Abbey. He wasnt giving it full beans but then again I dont think many were. Too much money invested to bin your car in the wet.
So. In summary, fantastic track, Best track experience ever after being so worried and would definatly do it again. Well worth the trip and £270 fuel bill from Warrington and back driving, tracking then returning to chear the Skylines on at TOTB!
Great to see Pete and Russ (SP30) and am just sorry I couldnt get you out with me.
Another plus is I had the car noise level checked. 107db but this was static and obviously not on boost but made 102 with the stupid bung thing in, so it looks like trackdays may be possible if its noisy ones.
