In memory of Wesbank Raceway. R.I.P,
There are memories of that track that will never be forgotten, they will stay in my heart forever.
Drag Racing a dying sport in SA
WesBank Raceway was a motorsport facility situated at Germiston in the Gauteng province of South Africa. It was built on the site of a former horse racing track (Gosforth Park opened in 2003).
The facility featured an oval track, dragstrip, road circuit and motorcross track, allowing for a wide range of events. It was so named due to a sponsorship deal with the South Africa WesBank company. The track closed in November 2007 after the property was sold to developers. Today Wesbank Raceway is in the memories of those who spent hours upon hours every week doing the things they love, wether it be a Wednesday nite, friday nite or on the weekend. Every time I drive past the area where the track used to be, it brings a tear to my eye. The drag strip has been totally demolished as well as all the stadiums and the circuit and oval. Construction has been underway since december last year. The track has been developed into an industrial park.
South African drag racers now have to do all the rounds of nationals and regionals at one strip, Tarlton International Raceway. Drag racing in South Africa is a dying sport unless another A Grade drag strip can be developed in short time.
KEEP DRIVING AND KEEP THE SPORT IN ACTION.!!
