TIME FOR A FACE LIFT OF TBR DOORSLAMMERS
The gold Castrol EDGE Top Doorslammers of the Team Bray Racing's have made their mark to be one of the most recognized liveries in championship drag racing. The appearance of the car is the first thing that people notice and generally the last thing that they forget, hence the importance of ensuring that the livery stands out from the rest of the pack.
There have been several evolutions from the original design of the Team Bray racing cars since beginning their partnership with Castrol, the world-class quality lubricants company, in 1988. All cars however included similarities from the beginning of Victor Bray's drag racing career.
The 2008 Castrol-Bray livery is an evolution based on no other designs used before. Team Brays design artist Little Mick has spent numerous hours massaging various concepts that would evolve to the current look.
This work started with lead pencil sketches, then coloured pencils, through to computer simulation and then finally many late nights with Little Mick and Victor working bits and pieces of coloured vinyl and paper patterns until the desired outcome was achieved.
"This current livery is one that has evolved over time, and like many teams we use to contain some continuity between years. To identify a Team Bray racing car next year, just look for some thing out side the square. That is the backbone of our car's design," said Victor.
Little Mick's work is not as simple as cutting the stickers out on the computerized vinyl cutting machine, but rather a work of art as he aims to keep the car design flowing amongst various sponsors logo's and colours, rather than appear like a tacked together billboard
As part of Castrol's new marketing strategy, a totally new look & feel will be created, which will be reflected in Victor's livery … although it's no surprise that the black, synonymous with Victor, will remain. There are a total of 6 colours used in the livery of the 2008 Team Bray Top Doorslammers. Across each car Little Mick uses approximately 36 meters of masking tape.
Each of the 172 sticker applications (most sponsors logos are multi-layered) applied to each of the Team Bray Racing cars are cut from single layer vinyl with a computer-plotting machine.
After him spending up to 8 hours cutting the stickers it takes Little Mick 16 hours applying them to the cars by hand.
The most difficult sign to apply is the Castrol EDGE product brand logo as it has to be painted over both the door and rear panel.
While the side image is the most difficult to apply, the complex associate sponsor's logo's on rear panel and wing stickers takes the longest time to apply.
